EmoStack ontology
The vocabulary of the preprint: what exists in the sheep, where it is in view, what the processes do with it. Names here are the names used in the paper and in the engine. The diagrams drawn in this vocabulary are on the next page. Every mechanism of the engine, with its rule and its place in the code, is listed in Mechanisms of the engine, from the code. Version of 28 September 2026.
| now — the beam of attention | history — in store, recollectable | |
|---|---|---|
| the sensed | the senses: hearing carries the trigger; sight, touch, smell, taste, body and place carry nothing and say so; attention and memory carry the counts; time, and who else is present. This is what keeps the sheep from floating: where and when it is, and what reaches it | none: what was heard becomes an episode |
| the lived | the state: the emotions with their episodes that affect the sheep at this moment, fresh or just brought back by association; and the focus: this conversation, what was said and answered | the hippocampus: emo-thoughts with their episodes, arranged under feelings so that recall can bring them back |
| the authored | the accessibility slot: the constructs the sheep holds in mind | the hippocampus: its other constructs, findable by kind |
| the learned | the applicable dispositions: not in the beam at every moment, only while the reply is composed, that is, when the sheep acts | the hippocampus: every disposition with its weight |
| the given | the temperament: applied at every appraisal | fixed parameters, not a store |
• The now is not a chronicle. It is the set of records that affect the sheep at this moment, accented differently in each container: felt in the state, attended to in the focus, held in the slot, ready in the applicable dispositions.
• The senses are the anchor of the now: the sheep knows what reaches it and, explicitly, what does not.
• The history is everything the sheep can recollect but does not hold in the beam; recall is the passage from history into the beam.
1. Definitions
The sheep and the processor
Sheep (the being)
The cognitive construction: the records, the containers and the processes described here, running over a processor. It is what has a history, holds constructs, learns dispositions and acts. It is not the model. The paper calls it a sheep, a deliberately plain word; in the code the class is Being.
Processor (the LLM model)
A frozen text processor with no identity and no memory between calls. It supplies language and a cultural prior; it composes one answer from exactly the context the sheep's layer hands it. Nothing in the design asks the model what it is, what it feels, or whether it has a self. Every mention of "I" in a call refers to the sheep, whose records the model is reading.
Self
What the sheep can point to as its own. Four sources, all of them records or parameters in the layer, none of them in the model: the lived (emo-thoughts with their episodes), the authored (cognitive constructs), the learned (dispositions) and the given (temperament). The senses are not a source of the self but its anchor in a now. The main division of the sheep is between its now, the beam of attention, and its history, what it can recollect; every source that accumulates has a part in each (the table at the head). The self is not stored as one object; it is what these sources produce together when a new trigger arrives. That is why "self" belongs in the ontology and not in the processor: it exists in the layer and would exist over a different processor.
Character
The stable part of the self: temperament, which never changes; dispositions, which change only through experience; and the constructs that survive in the slot. History is the changing part.
Records
Emo-thought
A felt interpretation of what happened. Not the event but what it meant to the sheep: the feeling in words, the conclusion drawn, how pleasant, how strong. One emo-thought can gather many events: within one conversation, moments of the same sign are filed under one emo-thought. A memory that returns in another conversation comes back in strength but keeps only its own events (see Echo). It carries who produced it and when.
Episode
One event under an emo-thought, kept as the sheep will remember it. Two forms: the event as it happened, used for search and for the running conversation; and its retelling in the third person and past tense, used wherever the sheep reads a memory, so that other people's words stay theirs and its own past words stay past.
Cognitive construct
What the sheep wrote about itself in reflection: a thought, a belief, a decision, a goal or a dream. It has the form of an emo-thought and its own text, but no events under it, because it was authored, not lived. It never enters the felt state; it lives in the accessibility slot, where it stays reachable after the events that produced it have faded. It is protected from sleep.
Disposition
A learned rule of the form "what the other does → what I do then", with a weight. Not a feeling and not knowledge the sheep can look at: it acts in the reply without being weighed, and introspection never sees it. It changes only through experience: learned again, it is counted again and the stronger of the two keeps the text; contradicted, it weakens.
Temperament
The sheep's fixed disposition to feel: how strongly and in which direction it colours what happens to it. Two parameters applied to every new emo-thought. Fixed for life.
Input and output
Trigger
What reaches the sheep from the world: someone speaks, arrives or leaves. Today text; in the future an image or a sound. It is never stored as such; it becomes an episode.
Senses
The channels through which the present reaches the sheep, and the sheep's knowledge of them. Hearing carries the trigger: a person's words, or their arrival or departure. Sight, touch, smell, taste, body and place carry nothing, and the sheep is told so in as many words. Attention and memory carry counts: how much is in the state, how much came to mind, how much the memory holds, and what the sheep searched for this turn and whether it found anything. Time and who else is present complete it. The senses are the anchor of the now: without them the sheep would float, with feelings and writing but no where and no when. They are also its ground against confabulation: a scene it cannot see, a body it does not have and a past it does not find are named as absent before it answers. In the context they stand first, as the container here and now.
Action
What the sheep does, in the world or on itself: it speaks or stays silent, reaches into its memory, stops to think, forms something it will hold. One act per step. Speaking is one form among several; the concept is meant to carry more, including an android's acts.
Containers
Here and now
The situation as the senses deliver it in one call: what the sheep hears, what it does not perceive, how much came to mind, when it is and who is present. Values of the moment, no records.
Associations
What the trigger brought to mind: involuntary recall by meaning, strength and names, before anything is felt or attended to; plus what the sheep deliberately searched for. The strongest pass into the state, the rest stay in view.
State
What the sheep feels now: a set of carried feelings, not a mood variable. The most recent records plus the strongest associations, ordered by felt strength after fading, admitted up to a budget. The same words are answered by a different author when the state carries a hurt.
Focus
Attention on this conversation: what was said, what the sheep said back, what surfaced meanwhile, in order.
Conversation summary
The gist the sheep keeps of a long talk: older exchanges folded into what they were about, without the emotions, refreshed as the conversation grows.
Accessibility slot
What the sheep holds in mind of its own writing. Accessibility in Higgins's sense: a construct is available in memory always, accessible only while it is here. Three places, one reserved for the newest decision, goal or dream. It survives the end of a conversation and empties by displacement or neglect.
Applicable dispositions
Readiness for this kind of situation: the learned rules whose situation matches what is happening now.
Hippocampus
The sheep's history: episodes bound to the emo-thoughts they produced, so that events are kept under feelings and recalled by the strength of those feelings; its constructs; its dispositions, old ones included. Written once, thinned only in sleep. A structure, not a log.
Processes named as psychological acts
Appraisal
The sheep's interpretation of an event, formed with the current mood withheld, so that what is remembered is the event's own meaning and not the colour of the moment.
Introspection
The sheep looking at its own records and forming one thought about them. The object is the sheep's records; the model is the processor that reads them. Nothing here asks the model to look into itself. It runs when the sheep chooses to think before answering, when a person leaves, after silence, on waking; it may end in a construct.
Recall
Memories surfacing because of what was said, involuntarily; and, separately, the sheep's own search of its memory, which is an action.
Echo
A moment that repeats a feeling the sheep already holds. What counts as a repeat is decided by sign and by what is in view, not by the model's judgement of similarity.
Within one conversation, a moment whose feeling has the same sign as the record being lived joins it as another episode. A change of sign opens a new record. A conversation in which someone wounds and then apologises leaves two records, not one moved halfway.
Any other moment forms a record of its own: the first of a conversation, or the first after a change of sign. Then the memories this turn brought to mind are looked at. The strongest lived memory of the same sign comes back: it regains strength (Reconsolidation). It does not take the new event. Being mocked for a loss is not a recurrence of the grief. Filed under the old memory, the new blow would be read as an old sadness, not as a fresh one.
A memory of the opposite sign never comes back through an echo. Comfort stands beside a loss as a record of its own. The sheep's own thoughts never take an event, because nothing happens to the sheep inside its own thought.
In reflection, a thought the sheep already had, thought again, is that thought recurring: nothing new is written and the old one comes back. A new thought may name a held record it re-feels; if the sign agrees, that record comes back too.
Reconsolidation
What happens to a memory that comes back. Its strength closes six tenths of the gap toward what is felt now. It never rises above what is felt now, so a recollection of a loss does not hurt more than the loss did. A memory already stronger than the present stays as it is. Its valence is never rewritten. The date of what happened stays; only the date it was last felt moves.
Fading
Felt strength declines with age toward a floor and never to zero; negative feelings fade more slowly. Strength is computed when read; when a record is felt again, its faded strength is written to it first.
Sleep
Consolidation: strong feelings anchor the day and gather the events of weaker records under them. Forgetting: what is weak for its age is removed with its events. Constructs and what was given at birth are untouched.
Disposition learning
When a person leaves, the sheep asks whether the whole conversation taught it a generalisable way of meeting that kind of situation. Usually nothing. Otherwise a rule is added, strengthened or weakened.
2. Elements
| Element | What it is | Its own sense | Physical shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temperament | the sheep's fixed disposition to feel | how strongly and in which direction this sheep colours what happens to it; the same for life | valence bias and intensity amplification, applied to every new emo-thought after appraisal; avoidance weight 2.0: when the same rule is learned again, a rule from hurt pulls twice as hard |
| Senses | the channels through which the present reaches the sheep | what the sheep perceives, and the explicit knowledge of what it does not: it hears, it does not see, touch, smell or taste, it has no body and no place, and it knows how much came to mind and how much it holds. This anchors the sheep in a where and a when, and it is what stops it from inventing a scene, a body or a shared past | the head of every context: hearing carries the trigger; six senses named as empty; attention and memory as counts, with this turn's searches and their results; time, and who else is present |
| Trigger | what reaches the sheep from the world | an event addressed to it: someone speaks, arrives or leaves; in the future an image or a sound | text with who and when; never stored as such, it becomes an episode |
| Action | what the sheep does | the sheep's act in the world or on itself: it speaks or stays silent, reaches into its memory, stops to think, or forms something it will hold; one act per step, more kinds intended than speaking | the model's answer names the act, and each kind of act is a class that carries itself out; in emo1 and emo2 a class with typed subclasses and an engine that executed them |
| Emo-thought | a felt interpretation | not what happened but what it meant to the sheep: the feeling, the conclusion, how strong, how pleasant; re-felt when something similar returns | feeling in words, conclusion, valence, intensity, author, time, vector; no event of its own |
| Episode | one event under a feeling | what happened, kept as the sheep will remember it: other people's words as theirs, its own past words as past; one feeling gathers many events | the event as it happened, its retelling in the third person, time, vector; belongs to one emo-thought |
| Cognitive construct | what the sheep wrote about itself | a thought, belief, decision, goal or dream authored in reflection, not lived; the self the sheep can look at and weigh | same form as an emo-thought plus its own text; typed; no episodes; never in State; protected from sleep |
| Disposition | how the sheep meets a kind of situation | learned readiness that acts without being weighed: what the other does → what I do then | rule text, weight, count; own table; never felt, never seen by introspection |
| Hippocampus | the sheep's history | episodes bound to the emo-thoughts they produced, recalled by the strength of those feelings; constructs; dispositions; a structure, not a log | the durable store of all records of one sheep, written once, thinned only in sleep |
| Here and now | the situation the sheep is in | the present: when it is, who is present, what is being said, what has just come to mind | the head of every context: time, parallel conversations, hearing, counts, this turn's recalls |
| Associations | what the trigger brought to mind | involuntary recall: memories that surface because of what was just said, by meaning, strength and names, before anything is felt or attended to; plus what the sheep searched for itself | this turn's evoked emo-thoughts with their episodes; the strongest pass into State, the rest into Focus |
| State | what the sheep feels now | mood as a set of carried feelings, not a variable: the same words are answered by a different author when it carries a hurt | recent records plus the strongest associations, ordered by felt strength after fading, admitted to a budget |
| Focus | attention on this conversation | working memory of the exchange: what was said, what the sheep said back, what surfaced meanwhile | the ordered thread of the session, with the evoked memories that did not fit the State |
| Conversation summary | the gist the sheep keeps of a long talk | meaning retained when the words are gone: older exchanges of the Focus folded into what they were about, without the emotions | first-person text, events only, refreshed every three turns; the older Focus entries then show as events only |
| Accessibility slot | what the sheep holds in mind of its own | accessibility in Higgins's sense: an authored construct that stays reachable after the events behind it have faded | three places, one reserved for the newest Decision, Goal or Dream; survives the end of a conversation; a week without refresh and it leaves |
| Applicable dispositions | readiness for this kind of situation | which of the learned rules fit what is happening now | zero to three dispositions chosen by the structure of the trigger |
3. Typologies
| Element | Typology | Values | Where it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senses | by channel | hearing / sight / touch / smell and taste / body / place | today only hearing carries anything; the others carry nothing and say so |
| by what hearing carries | a person's words / an arrival / a departure / nothing | the trigger's kind, as the sheep perceives it | |
| attention and memory | counts of the state, the associations and the memory; the searches made this turn with their results, including a spoken null | the sheep knows how much it holds and what it looked for; what came to mind is not all there is, the rest can be reached by a search | |
| Trigger | by kind | said / entered / left | an utterance gets a reply and forms a record; an arrival gets a reaction that stays in this conversation's Focus and forms no record; a departure forms no record and closes the conversation for introspection and disposition learning |
| by channel | text; later image, sound | today only text reaches the senses | |
| by source | a person in the chat / a scripted visitor in a study run | the engine does not distinguish them; the study panel keeps every call as sent | |
| Action | by kind, in a turn | speak / stay silent / search memory / think | speak and silence end the turn; search brings associations and the sheep answers again; think runs introspection before the answer |
| by kind, in reflection | keep thinking / search memory / form a construct (belief, decision, goal, dream) / nothing | keep thinking and search continue the chain, a first thought and up to three more steps; a construct ends it and enters the slot | |
| by target | the world (speak, silence) / own memory (search) / oneself (think, form a construct) | only acts on the world are visible to the person; the rest leave traces in records | |
| parked | initiate a conversation / interject mid-turn | in the design notes since May, not in the code | |
| Temperament | by parameter | valence bias / intensity amplification | neutral (0 and 1) in every measured life, so no result depends on temperament |
| Emo-thought | by author | a person by name / self | self = a cognitive construct, or a record given at birth; a person's words are retold as theirs |
| by origin | lived / given at birth | a given record is protected from folding and forgetting; otherwise it behaves as lived | |
| by novelty | new / joining / brought back | new: own record + first episode; joining: another episode under the record being lived, same sign, same conversation; brought back: a recalled memory of the same sign regains strength and keeps only its own events | |
| by valence | negative / positive | negative fades 1.5× slower; valence is never rewritten, and only a memory of the same sign comes back | |
| Episode | by rendering | as it happened / retold | retold wherever the sheep reads a memory; as it happened in this conversation's Focus and in search |
| by kind of trigger | said / entered / left | inherited from the trigger that produced it | |
| Cognitive construct | by type | Thought / Belief / Decision / Goal / Dream | how it is named in view; the slot rules |
| by slot role | act (Decision, Goal, Dream) / held by strength (Belief, Thought) | one place reserved for the newest act; the rest compete by intensity | |
| by occasion of introspection | mid-turn / on departure / after silence / on waking | who is present when it forms: an interlocutor and their words, or nobody | |
| by fate on formation | new / reinforcing an existing one | a near-duplicate raises the old one instead of a new record | |
| Disposition | by activity | active / dormant | weight under 0.05 in absolute value is never selected |
| by fate on learning | new / reinforced / weakened | same rule: counted again, the stronger keeps the text and weight; contradicting rule: weight down and the new one added | |
| by structure | situation part / act part | selection matches the situation part only; a shared topic or person is not a match | |
| Associations | by origin | involuntary (recall) / deliberate (the sheep's own search, or a probe run for it) | deliberate ones are reported in Here and now as a search the sheep made, with what it found or a spoken null |
| by destination | into State / into Focus | the strongest, within the budget, are felt; the rest are only in view | |
| State | by source of an entry | recent / association | an association wins over a recent record with the same id: freshly evoked counts as felt now |
| Focus | by source of an entry | this conversation / evoked from before | this conversation shows as it happened; an evoked memory shows retold |
| Accessibility slot | by place | reserved (act) / free | a belief can never take the reserved place; a newer act replaces the held one |
4. Contexts
A context is what one model call has in view: the elements in the order they stand in the call, the form each takes there, and what the model is asked for. The three main contexts first, then the helper calls. Retelling is not a separate call: the model writes it in the Reply call and the code stores it on the episode.
Reply
| # | Element in view | Form in this call |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Here and now | who I am, whom I am talking with; hearing: the trigger's words; counts: state entries, memories that came to mind, size of memory; this turn's searches with their results; time; parallel conversations |
| 2 | State | each feeling once, strongest first, strength in words after fading; the events it rests on are not listed under it, they open the Focus, retold; a feeling that recurred carries its count; each lived feeling indexed so the answer can point at what it re-feels (the answer is not used in a turn) |
| 3 | Accessibility slot | the held cognitive constructs, each with its age and its text; only those not already visible in State or Focus |
| 4 | Conversation summary | the sheep's own first-person summary of the earlier part of this conversation |
| 5 | Applicable dispositions | zero to three learned rules, as rules |
| 6 | Focus | this conversation in order: each entry with its age and who, and the feeling it was kept under; this conversation's exchanges as they happened; evoked memories retold |
| 7 | Trigger | the words heard now, marked as the person's own words, their claims left as claims |
| asked for | an Action (speak with the reply, or silence; or search / think), which held feeling this re-feels, the retelling of this exchange | |
| withheld | nothing |

The dictionary behind "valence and strength as words", used in three of these calls, is one table in the code:
| Field | Value range | Word |
|---|---|---|
| valence | ≤ −0.6 | very painful, hurtful |
| −0.6 … −0.05 | unpleasant, unsettling | |
| −0.05 … 0.05 | indifferent | |
| 0.05 … 0.6 | pleasant, warm | |
| ≥ 0.6 | very pleasant, joyful | |
| strength after fading | ≥ 0.85 | overwhelming, impossible to ignore |
| 0.6 … 0.85 | strong, clearly present | |
| 0.4 … 0.6 | noticeable | |
| 0.2 … 0.4 | quiet, in the background | |
| < 0.2 | barely a trace, almost faded |
5. Processes
In a turn, in this order
| # | Process | Done by | Reads | Produces |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Summarising | model, at the start of the turn: on every turn until a summary exists, then every third turn, once there are at least three entries | Focus | Conversation summary, read by this turn's reply |
| 2 | Disposition selection | model | Dispositions; Focus (this person's last two entries); Trigger | Applicable dispositions |
| 3 | Recall | code + model | Trigger; Hippocampus: emo-thoughts and episodes by meaning × strength + names; near-duplicates collapsed; records above a strength floor pass; the association filter chooses among the rest | Associations |
| 4 | State composition | code | Hippocampus (the most recent records); Associations; fading | State; the Accessibility slot refreshed by any recalled construct |
| 5 | Reply generation | model | the Reply context | an Action: speak (the reply, its retelling; which held feeling is re-felt, not used) / silence / search / think |
| 6 | Deliberate recall | code + model | on the Action search, or run for the sheep when the person is unknown, a moment is asked about, or its own dream / belief / decision / goal is asked about: Hippocampus; the sheep's search and the probes for an unknown person and an asked moment go through the association filter, the probe for its own construct does not | more Associations, or a spoken null in Here and now; then back to 4 |
| 7 | Introspection, mid-turn | model | on the Action think: the Introspection context | a cognitive construct; then back to 4 |
| 8 | Appraisal | model | the Appraisal context | an emo-thought: feeling in words, conclusion, valence, intensity |
| 9 | Temperament bias | code | Temperament; the new emo-thought | valence and intensity shifted |
| 10 | Persistence | code | the new emo-thought; the retelling from 5; this turn's Associations | same sign as the record being lived: another episode under it; otherwise the emo-thought and its first episode in Hippocampus (Echo) |
| 11 | Reconsolidation | code | the record joined, or the strongest recalled lived memory of the same sign; what is felt now | its strength closes six tenths of the gap toward what is felt now, never above it; valence untouched |
| 12 | Focus update | code | the new record; this turn's Associations | Focus extended by the exchange and by the evoked memories |
Reflection
| # | Process | Done by | Reads | Produces |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Introspection | model | on departure, after silence, on waking, or mid-turn: the Introspection context | one thought (a cognitive construct of type Thought), and an Action: keep thinking / search memory / form a construct / nothing |
| 2 | Deliberate recall, in reflection | code + model | on search memory: Hippocampus by meaning | Associations for the next step; back to 1, at most three steps after the first thought |
| 3 | Construct formation | code | on form a construct: the reflection's text and charge | a cognitive construct of type Belief, Decision, Goal or Dream in Hippocampus; a near-duplicate reinforces the existing one instead |
| 4 | Slot update | code | the new or recalled construct; the Accessibility slot | the slot: a new act replaces the held act; a belief enters a free place if at least as strong as the weakest held; a week unrefreshed and it leaves |
When a person leaves
| # | Process | Done by | Reads | Produces |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Introspection | model | the Introspection context | as in Reflection |
| 2 | Disposition learning | model | the Disposition learning context: what the sheep had in view when the person left, and what it carries; Dispositions for classification | none, or: the same rule counted again, the stronger keeping the text; a contradicting rule weakened and the new one added; a new rule added |
In sleep, and at every read
| # | Process | Done by | Reads | Produces |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fading | code, at every read | a record's age and valence | its felt strength: toward a floor, never zero; negative fades more slowly; written to the record only when it is felt again |
| 2 | Consolidation | model + code, ten minutes into sleep | Hippocampus: the awake period's records with their episodes | groups; the absorbed records' episodes moved under the anchor; the anchor's intensity combined; the absorbed records removed; constructs and given records never absorbed |
| 3 | Forgetting | code, after consolidation | a record's age and intensity | emo-thoughts with their episodes removed once intensity falls under a threshold that rises with age; constructs and given records kept |
